Exploring the reason why young gay male designers seem to be favored over women in the fashion industry, former Gucci and YSL head Tom Ford lands upon a touchy subject: "Sometimes women are trapped by their own views of themselves, but some have built careers around that," Ford told the New York Times. "Donna Karan was obsessed with her hips and used her own idiosyncrasies to define her brand." Is that a compliment or an insult?

What woman isn't? (obsessed with her hips that is) Okay, sure, there are a couple of women out there who have slim hips but it's far from the "norm" or average! The reason I love Donna Karan is that she dresses "real" women. I hardly think that's insulting. It's realistic. It's truth. There is a huge market of women in their 40's and 50's - who are the "new" 40's and 50's, even 60's, who aren't your grandmothers 40's, 50's and 60's. We are marrying younger men, (my husband is 8 years younger and we've been married 11 years now), we're working out at the gym, we have good jobs, we support ourselves (and sometimes the men we love!) and we like to look stylish and wear designer clothes too. Unfortunately once you hit your late 40's and the body changes - especially in the hip area and I'm thrilled someone like Donna is designing for "the rest of us!" We're not staying in the back of the closet anymore!
