Happy Holidays

merry-xmas-japan.JPGFlypaper wishes you a delightful holiday season. We are taking a break until the New Year, drinking egg nog and "researching" the post-Christmas sales. Hope you enjoy time away from the computer, too, and we'll catch up in 2006 with style resolutions you might want to consider for the new year. Love, Flypaper.

Strike Style

workinggirl.jpgThe New York Times reminds us that when transit workers strike, fashion suffers, too. Indeed, it was the 1980 transit strike that spawned the power suit-and-running shoe fashion faux pas (ala Melanie Griffith in Working Girl) that still haunts city streets 25 years later. Now that it's over, Transit Strike 2005 still threatens to leave us with "the fashion equivalent of a mullet" says designer Cynthia Rowley. "It's party on top, all business and practical on the bottom."

"One is totally fake."

Match It Up

table-setting-cava.jpgTrying to get behind the magic that makes a holiday party, the New York Times Style Magazine interviews designer Roberto Cavalli on his decadent and legendary events. Some things, however, don't sound so fabulous: New York Times: "So the gowns can match the tablecloths?" Roberto Cavalli: "They can. I try not to do this for big events, because I don't want to embarrass anybody arriving with a gown that's the same as the tablecloth." That would be bad.

The Remix Queen

iris-apfel2.jpgiris-apfel.jpgThe Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute pays tribute to the wardrobe of style innovator Iris Barrel Apfel, whose day-to-day ensembles were nothing short of fabulous. The 84-year-old textile designer still loves mixing high and low, sporting "Dior haute couture with flea-market finds," as the Met catalog says. "In the world of Iris Barrel Apfel, it doesn't matter if something is 'in' or 'out'" reports Fashion Wire Daily. "And it doesn't matter if it cost $5 or $50,000." [images from FWD and the MET]

Itty Bitty Clothes

mko.jpgIf you happen to be in Los Angeles this weekend and you're extremely tiny, keep your eye on the Out of the Closet thrift store in West Hollywood for Mary Kate Olsen's anorexic wardrobe, which she's purging now that she's gained 15 pounds. Considering how baggy her clothes are, maybe you don't have to be a size 0 to wear them. [via InTouch Weekly]

Pam Goes Shopping

pam-and.jpgWhen actress Pamela Anderson's producers dressed her like a trashy tramp on her sitcom "Stacked," she wasn't about to take it lying down. Armed with $100,000 and shopping balls of steel, Pam nearly "cleaned out" the PETA-approved Stella McCartney Beverly Hills store in order to add class to her look on the show. "Anderson scooped up everything from cute sweaters and sexy dresses to Stella's trademark vegan pumps," a source told MSNBC.

On Second Thought...

Bague-astrale-packshot.jpg"What I really want is a ring called Bague Perle de Rosee," said Nadja Swarovski, vp of international communications at Swarovski London on what she wants for Christmas. "It has a large conch pearl in the center surrounded by diamonds and pearls in white gold. It is by Lorenz Baumer and it is so beautiful." And then she thought again. "Also, health, safety, and peace on earth." From the JC Report.

Hurray for Bollywood

bollywood-tm.jpgWith Kim finally out of the picture, the number of girls is dwindling on "Top Model" -- and so is my interest in the remaining four. Not only had none of them ever heard of Bollywood, they continued to debate who is the most mature among them. (I'll settle it: You're all equally immature!) It was worth watching just to see the look on Bre's face as she narrowly avoided the boot and Tyra wished Jayla well on her trip home to the tie-dye toga party from whence she came.

My Adidas RIP

rundmc-adidas.jpgOld-school rapper Darryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC has dropped the shell-toed shoes he popularized with the song "My Adidas" in favor of Le Coq Sportifs. "I put those shoes on and it was a wrap," DMC told UPI. "I finally found the sneaker I was looking for. Finally I could get out of my shell-toes." If the shoe fits, wear it -- but "My Le Coq Sportif" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
