The 80s blew. I survived them and I know. New York City was the No Wave-era's wannabe mecca and Maripol, the French stylist who festooned "Like A Virgin"-era Madonna with rosaries and black rubber washers appeared at gallery openings and after-hours parties with a Polaroid camera, snapping the young geeks who eventually morphed into today's style-makers. Her photos from the Lower East Side in the 1980s, on display at the Soho Grand Hotel through August 17th, feature blow-ups of Anna Sui as a chubby groupie, Naomi Campbell as a bimbo in pumps and a mini skirt and, of course, Mado aggressively baring her midriff. Thank God that's over.
