Triple Threat

madonna-sorry-vid2.jpgWhispers that Madonna may model for Viktor & Rolf's line for H&M make for particularly appealing rumors, if the trifecta of high fashion, popstar and cheap-chic retailer do indeed come together. "She's a superstar, a style icon -- and controversial," wrote Swedish newspaper the Daily Expressesn. "Now Madonna could be H&M's next clothing model."

I Choose Me

carine-carpet.pngWhen should you distrust a fashion editor? When she tells you she outdresses all the models and celebrities around her. "Mariacarla looks very sexy in Givenchy and usually people don't think Givenchy is very sexy," French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld told Fashion Week Daily at an Amfar benefit, which raised $4.2 million. "Sofia [Coppola] was very special in Givenchy. But I was the best dressed on the red carpet." Judge for yourself.

Never Stop

gwenstefani2112.jpgWe kept wondering if singer and L.A.M.B. designer Gwen Stefani would give the fashion a rest once she hit the delivery room, but apparently not. She arrived in labor "wearing her signature red lipstick and looking very excited." Some want to see the style of the next generation. "We're waiting with bated breath to see what hot-off-the-catwalk baby gear the little fella will be kitted out in," says Ananova.

Freeze Frame

maripol_1.jpgThe 80s blew. I survived them and I know. New York City was the No Wave-era's wannabe mecca and Maripol, the French stylist who festooned "Like A Virgin"-era Madonna with rosaries and black rubber washers appeared at gallery openings and after-hours parties with a Polaroid camera, snapping the young geeks who eventually morphed into today's style-makers. Her photos from the Lower East Side in the 1980s, on display at the Soho Grand Hotel through August 17th, feature blow-ups of Anna Sui as a chubby groupie, Naomi Campbell as a bimbo in pumps and a mini skirt and, of course, Mado aggressively baring her midriff. Thank God that's over.

Supermarket Chic

supershopping copy.jpgThe BBC reports that the hot new place to find that Gucci knock-off is "down the aisle between the dog food and the baked beans." Yep -- in the U.K., style has come to the supermarket. The upside? Cheaper prices and stealth shopping that won't raise eyebrows on the credit card bill. (Laura, from London, writes "The transaction shows up on the statement as 'Sainsbury's' and the clothes are so cheap it doesn't inflate the bill too much!") The downside? No dressing rooms.

And for that, the New York Times has chided St. John for leaving their demographic of distinguished gentleladies and sexing it up with the likes of Angie and Gisele. Curbside Catwalk: Santa Fe, NM

We caught up with Silver, an 18-year-old aspiring model from Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a skater-punk meets goth-glamazon look. She describes her style as "pretty random. It's a combination of everything." She gravitates towards dark, earth-toned, baggy clothing.

What she's sporting:

+ Circa skate shoes
+ Express Editor pants
+ black tank top, given to her by a friend
+ black bag - it's from Wal-Mart, but she fixed it up by safety-pinning patches and adding buttons.
+ silver bangles - torn off a bag of $2 hair ties.
+ chain necklaces were a gift from her boyfriend.

What makes Silver tarnish? She hates it when girls wear too-small pants. "They should just get pants that fit instead of trying to shove themselves into something."

A Feel for Felt

Felt Pillow.jpgA cadre of gifted young designers effectively launched the lowly fabric of felt into the realm of high design this weekend at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. The British team stood out for using the lowly craft fabric to lend heft to fanciful floral designs on pillows and rugs while the Japanese harnessed its Crayola intensity to their bottle blankets and lamp shades. —Bloomingdale's women's fashion director, on the long and the short of it. From the New York Times.

Double Vision

britney-spears-teddy-bear01.jpgashlee-britney.jpgCan we all finally admit that Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson are the same person? Glamour (U.K.) ran a spread on Britney, who looks just like Ashlee in this photo, left, and Ashlee's recent nose job and dye job bring her just steps from looking like Brit. All the same to me. Thanks to JustJared.com for the scan.

What a Dream

urban-herme.jpgBelieve it or not, the truly fashion-forward are at MIT's Media Lab. The project, called Urbanhermes, is developing "fashion accessories on which patterns and designs can change according to the wearer's whim," reports PC Magazine. What wouldn't be more convenient than wirelessly changing the print of your dress if you show up to a party wearing the same thing?

Hello, Highway

tat.jpgFile this under the unglamorous lives of models: Russian model Tatyana Simanava smashed her arm, dislocated her shoulder and damaged her face after mistaking the RV exit door for the bathroom door "en route to a glamorous Staten Island photo shoot," as Gawker so kindly put it. Lesson learned. [via New York Daily News]

Kate's Collection

kate-clothes.jpgRumors of Kate Moss' clothing line are getting fiercer by the day. "I'm going to take everyone on and I'm going to shock everyone," Moss supposedly said. (Does this sound like the closed-mouthed Moss?) "I know what works, I know what women want, and I know there is money to be made. My name is my brand and it's going to be the biggest thing in fashion." A close friend told Britain's Grazia magazine that something should be in the works by next year.

kate-brit-2006.jpgVogue must really like this Dior dress to put it on the cover of Japanese Vogue and British Vogue a few months later. Really, my dears, in a globalized world, you can't get away with these sorts of repeats. Thanks to the wonderful blog Fashionologie for noticing the duplicates.

Curbside Catwalk: Ann Arbor, Michigan

A film student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Rica D., 23, has over 60 pairs of shoes and four closets. She likes to mix things up. "I'll wear board shorts one day, and Dior shoes the next," Rica says. This Virginia native is wearing:

+ Hale Bob halter top "From Loehmann's for $40, and I saw it at a hip-hop/trendy store the next week for $200!"
+ Serfontaine jeans
+ Steve Madden beaded wedges
+ Moyna purse, made in India
+ fresh-water pearl and silver necklace from the Philippines
+ earrings (she's got ten pairs in her ears) from random varied places, such as Meijer, Claire's, and a store in Maui.

Fashion trends that make Rica want to stab herself in the eye include
girls who wear words on their butts and those huge white platform flip-flops ("unless you're coming off a boat, you shouldn't be seen in them").

Like, OMG!

BeverlyCenter.jpgThe mega-mall is getting a mega-makeover. WWD reports that Southern California's South Coast Plaza and Beverly Center are getting major overhauls to try and lure more shoppers and their credit cards. "Former shopping meccas are fighting to keep from becoming relics," says the Philadelphia Business Journal. Ah, relics. Does that mean we'll soon see Mall of America in vintage mall clearinghouse Malls of America?

Fashion VIPs

julie-gil.jpgNew York magazine's "Most Influential People in Fashion" spread has a few gems among the yawns (yes, yes, we know Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs are influential). Some highlights: Barneys buyer Julie Gilchrist hits up student shows herself to seek out fresh talent (aspiring designers, please memorize her photo, left), and vintage buyer Mary Catalina's collection is often the "inspiration" behind Oscar de la Renta and Anna Sui's runway collections.

“Even paint-wielding PETA activists and a whiny roman à clef can't touch her.”

Creepy Jeans

rocker-levis.jpgWhile the fashion-forward debate the merits of carrot-top jeans vs. skinny jeans, Levi's is working on ever-more advanced styles -- such as surveillance jeans.

In The Mix

1990s-faces.jpgFollowing Versace's announcement that its fall campaign will use a gaggle of big-name models (Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Daria Werbowy, Angela Lindvall, and Carolyn Murphy) rather than celebrities, WWD declares that models are back. Some congratulate Versace for using a "mix" of models young and old in the campaign, to which one commenter on Fashionologie retorts: "That's the most mono-racial bunch of models ever. There are so many models of other races they could have picked to give a mix. Gawd."

Accessorize to Murder

BB-Simon.jpgAccessories The Show hit New York this week, transforming the Javitz Center into a smouldering cathouse of bling. Dazzling bra straps winked from booths next to red silk kabbalah bracelets, while tiny crystal toe rings vied for the public eye with gem-encrusted finger fruits in 1,400 exhibits that foretold the jangle of circle chains, charm clusters and boho bags this fall. Oh, and don't bury those skulls! They'll be cracking again by Halloween.

This One's For You

eye-vmag.jpgdaria-bud.jpgThis gorgeous image of some pretty intese eye makeup from V magazine, left, more than makes up for the cheesy underboob-exposing photo of Daria by photographer Mario Testino. What is this, a Budweiser poster?

Sad News

2001_03_foto_12_06.gifLosing a husband to an elephant stampede is tragic, and doubly tragic when it makes a widow out of Blumarine designer Anna Molinari. Despite all the recent glam photos of models with elephants, we are reminded of the sheer strength of the pachyderm family now that Blumarine's co-founder Gianpaolo Tarabini has been trampled to death by an elephant while on safari in Zimbabwe.

Just Eat It

dean-and-deluca-cake.jpgThis pink bag is really sweet -- literally. Not to be outdone by other, overpriced "it" bags, upscale grocery store Dean and Deluca have created a fondant-coated cake in the shape of a cute little handbag. Now, you can have your purse and eat it, too. [via Luxist]
