Safe vs. Wearable

The balance between safe and wearable for a designer is really a tug-of-war between the shopper and the fashion editor. In order to get editorial attention, you must present a collection like Balenciaga's, dominated by insane bubble skirts or robot legs. These editorials might not sell those garments, but they will brand you as cool so people will secretly go and buy a boring old handbag or sunglasses. To sell in stores, you have to make "safe" clothes that people will actually purchase and wear -- clothes that by definition will never be featured in a magazine. "I have never been featured in Vogue," designer Elie Tahari lamented to the New York Times, "I guess I'm not important enough."
