Best Dressed Bloggers: La Femme

by Wendy at April 5, 2007, 9:40 AM

Adeleine's experience as a storied world traveler informs her blog, La Femme, with a decidedly international and timeless bent. Less about trends and more about classic style and what inspires it, La Femme will keep you posted not just on the runways, but on art, literature and poetry as well. She's not just smart, she's young, too, and just turned twenty earlier this week -- happy birthday, Adeleine!

This is what I wore to my workplace today.
Everyday of my life I wear boots -- I feel naked without boots, even at home. It's often cold where I live, so I wear pants a lot, even under some of my dresses, because when I go out I often walk for hours. Today I'm wearing a 1960s style princess line coat with peter pan collar and oversize buttons. My gold Rajasthani earrings were a treasure I found in Little India in Toronto. I create armbands for most of my outfits, just because I like them, and I usually carry one of my brightest bags to cheer me up in gray weather. This one is by Marimekko.

How did you become obsessed with fashion?
I'm mostly in love with the aesthetic possibilities of exploring and sharing personal style, and fashion is a critical part of that. I see the aesthetic possibilities for each person becoming their own painting. For me, fashion is one of the most important paintbrushes, but it takes desire and creativity to make something beautiful. The fashion shows were one of the first beautiful doors into another world for me. Once I walked through that door, I was hooked.

What spring trends are you excited about?
I feel rather schizophrenic about trends because although I enjoy observing them and writing about them, my personal fashion universe spans the last three centuries, and in that context, I barely register seasonal fashion trends. I just look all the time for things I find beautiful or interesting, and I look at fashion, art, trends and style over the past centuries as my inspiration. It's probably true that I'm never fully in the present. But for the record, I love the potential of Balenciaga's extraordinary cyber-femme heels.

Who do you find most inspiring as a designer?
As a human being, Vivienne Westwood seems pretty inspiring to me. I'm very much in love with everything Olivier Theyskens did for Rochas, and is now doing for Nina Ricci. Because I feel so bonded to Scandinavia, I've always loved the stories of Marimekko and IvanaHelsinki.

What song best describes your style?
The soundtrack to Sally Potter’s film Orlando. It's ethereal, it unfolds like a tapestry, and it paints time travel for your ears. I always feel completely at home as Orlando moves through the centuries. I identify very much with that film and its beautiful soundtrack.

If you could describe your style as a fashion mashup, what would it be?
Well, today I feel like Wuthering Heights meets Aeon Flux. Ask me again tomorrow.

Fashion is one of the ways we paint a picture of ourself, of our potential, of our experience with being human. What distinguishes Adeleine is her ability to weave history, experience, style, art, and personality into an expression that inspires us. We transcend the mundane and experience a generous flow of suggestion, direction and inspiration. Thank you for your unique mix of the very human and the very divine, Adeleine.
