It was great fun hearing New York Times fashion guru Cathy Horyn give a chat yesterday at The Art Institute of Portland. Among many topics, Horyn gabbed about the Weinstein Company's purchase of Halston ("Harvey told me at a party last week that his goal is to reissue all the old dresses"), Tom Ford's new store on Madison Avenue ("The butler at the door makes it feel like you're shopping in a gated community"), and my favorite tidbit of the day -- she shops at Wal-Mart. "I've fooled many retailers with my clothes," she said, smirking like a lady who's seen it all. [photo by Willamette Week]

i've never even heard of ms. horyn, nor have i ever considered shopping for clothes for me or my family @ walmart. the people making fun of what she said, however, need to shut UP. as a very fashion conscious mom of teenagers, all of you self-declared divas need to get a life. MY life isn't about working overtime so that my kid can wear a $260 pair of bluejeans or a bikini (98 bucks for the "final clearance" top and 90 bucks for the bottoms which have less material than an infant washcloth).
i'm a size 2 petite; so is my 18 year old. it's pretty much impossible to find decent looking clothes @ this size so we use a lot of websites and buy online. when i do go to the malls and the neiman's & the saks i see how we (women our size) are discriminated against by designers bigtime. large, tall and overweight women can buy off the rack, look like their clothes were bought sometime in the past decade for a miniscule of what we end up paying for these "bargain fashions."
no--you won't ever see me in wal-mart. but that's because of the historically awful way that they treat the kids who have jobs there--it's NOT because i don't think that college-educated moms with good, hard-earned careers need to be gouged by the "uber-cool" in the fashion arena.
keep on blogging, baby. just don't expect me to read it and/or give you credibility.
