Subconsciously every fashionista knows that nothing quite sets off an outfit like a black hat --not just any black hat-- the perfect black hat. The stylish folks captured here topped off their looks with a Bowler and a Fedora.
If you're like me, you too are having second and third thoughts as to what to wear for tonight's festivities. My personal style tends to lean toward the outrageous, especially for celebratory events; thus I find myself naturally inspired by Drag queens for their over-the-top style in both their wardrobe choices and dramatic posturing. Fashionistas, I encourage you to add a dash of "Drag Glam" to your NYE looks tonight.
With so many "best of" lists floating around the web, we at Flypaper were inspired to share the best of our closets and a few ideas for what to get with all those gift cards you got this holiday season.
Oh, to be at the receiving end of Malcolm's cast-offs. From his suburban chic youth to his modern day luxe label addictions -- Gucci kicks and Marc by Marc Jacobs cardigans are on his list -- this lifelong trend fiend has yet to miss out on the latest must-have item.
Corinna on the other hand prefers the comfort of her worn-in, hand-dyed, belly-bulge friendly Salt Works jeans. During a scarf-down session of Buffalo Wings, she often fantasizes about her fashionable alter ego-Charlotte Gainsbourg receiving comped Balenciaga goodies from Nicolas Ghesquiere himself.
Cherrybomb, seamlessly plays the roles of dog lover, bodybuilder and fashion blogger with a mostly black wardrobe embellished with funky warm woolen gloves and bright copper Oliver Peoples shades.
Oregonian Stacey admits to being a fan of winter. All the boots, coats and cold-weather accessories gives her a warm, tingly sensation and a plausible excuse for her six fall/winter coats, 10 hats, 5 pairs of gloves and four pairs of knee high boots.
As for me, I believe "boring" is a choice—mom jeans and granny panties don't buy themselves. From my "I'm ready for the runway," Charles Nolan wedge-heel boots, to my chunky bold rings and Dolce & Gabbana clutch bag, every item in my wardrobe makes a stylish statement.
Flypaper, wishes all of our stylish readers a Happy New Year!
Dude in the swim jammers, knock it off please. Yes, you’re hot, but those weird half-leggings flatter no man, and unless you’re training for the 1200-meter freestyle in Beijing there’s no excuse. Swim cap not goofy enough for you? Put on some goggles. Just get out of those girdle trunks which make you look like you got knocked off your bike and had your jersey stolen. You’re liable to give yourself an infection.

Looks like rapping badass M.I.A. is the next hip face to launch a thousand dollar designer bag, as she poses here for a new Marc by Marc Jacobs ad shot by Juergen Teller. We copped this shot from Fashiontribes, where more than one commenter found her to look a bit "greasy." (We're just glad she didn't have to pull a Sofia Coppola and get naked in bed with her bottle of MJ perfume.)
For those of you who waited until last weekend to do all your holiday shopping, as I did, your last-minute surge did nothing to boost an already dismal spending season. The Chicago Tribune reports that retailers are desperately counting on the last week of the year when shoppers descend on clearance sales; redeem the $26.3 billion we spent on gift cards this year; and return those ugly sweaters and socks from Aunt So-and-So. Personally, I didn't receive any nice-try-but-are-you-nuts? gifts this year (a testament to my carefully-worded wish list, natch), but if you're among the masses who did, it's probably best to wait until after New Year's when the kiddies are back in school, the amateurs are back in the 'burbs and you're back at work. What are long lunch breaks for, if not for shopping?
Footwear connoisseurs know that the design of a great pair of stylish shoes starts with the heel. The heels on the pumps featured here include a geometric pattern and a peek-a-boo strap.
Chunky, funky jewelry that is. The over-the-top style and unique mixing of both metals, leather, plastic and bling, alongside an additional, unexpected accessory such as the matching ring and white, studded leather bracelet, made these pieces worth a shot.
Hailed as "the latest super rad fad in the DIY winter fashion movement" by Threadbangers, it is simply a combination of a scarf and a hoodie. With close to a 100,000 YouTube views in less than 20 days I predict this trend will be popping up like crazy on both the street and the runway very soon. Peep the video below to learn how to create your own.
Just on the heels of their attack on Mary Kate and Ashley, PETA has a new holiday card aimed at -- who else? -- Anna Wintour. It's a snow globe, one you can shake as fur literally flies. But is anyone else sensing that PETA has an unhealthy obsession with Wintour? We'd imagine if PETA saw pictures from Mary J. Blige's album release party (and the artwork from her new album "Growing Pains") they might find a new target, because Mary apparently is all about the fab furs. PETA should be warned however -- the one-time icon of ghetto fabulous fashion IS from the hood and likely won't take kindly to paint-dousing.
Fashionistas can appreciate a good bauble, especially a well placed one. Captured here at a Heatherette party are what I like to call "bauble shrugs". Created in both 80's retro and traditional glass with drape tassels, these pieces are quite baublicious!
Buzzing around at night over the past few weeks, I've noticed upon several occasions younger men sporting bowties. Silver sequins, electric stripes and Gen X swagger have replaced both the "stuffy professor" character and traditional bowtie.
I will be the first to admit my serious addiction to accessories, especially bags; like shoes and jewels a fashionista can never have too many. The use of vivid colors and dynamic graphics on these cotton beauties put a funky spin on the classic images of John Wayne and the Mona Lisa.
Whoever said "beauty is only skin deep," obviously never got by in the world on their looks. Supermodel Naomi Campbell knows that beauty will get you in just about anywhere -- even an interview with the infamous Fidel Castro. Just two months after a meeting with Hugo Chavez, the famed beauty has reportedly stated that she will be doing whatever it takes to ensure her coveted interview with Castro goes smoothly, even to the point of spending the holidays with the Cuban leader. Maybe highschool graduates should opt for plastic surgery over tuition. Unreal.
Shirley Maclaine, will play Coco Chanel in an upcoming Lifetime TV miniseries, which chronicles the icon's later years in Paris, after she exiled herself in Germany and Switzerland during World War II. Fashionista reports that the project is supported by both Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld, with costume designer Stefano de Nardis even getting archival research from the company. Meanwhile rumors swirl that Demi Moore is in talks for an American Chanel movie and a feature-length movie has currently begun production in Paris, with Audrey Tatou as the lead.
Wanting to link make-up back to fashion, Calvin Klein will debut its first ever make-up collection in January 2008. Utilizing the colors that are found on the runway, the cosmetics are actually being created to match both the color and the texture of the garments; if for example a fuchsia shirt has a cellophane overlay, the matching lipstick might have a touch of gloss. I predict that if the beauty line does well, other designers will follow suit.
When I first heard that the ankle boot was making a comeback, I truly didn't realize how fabulous the little booties would be. Buzzing around town over the past few nights, the unique and bold booties captured here rocked my stylish heart. Fashionistas take note that the black and white saddle pair belong to Mr. Richie Rich of Heatherette.
Fashionistas know that besides the usual holiday stress: shopping, cooking, cleaning, annoying in-laws, there is the duty of having the "right" holiday dress. Though I usually find silver dresses quite difficult to pull off, the surprisingly flattering geometric shapes peppered with black details, makes these dresses a must have this holiday season.
While making my rounds at the many holiday parties, I noticed a serious uprising of black and white printed scarves, worn by both sexes. The way they were worn was just as varied as the actual patterns themselves which included traditional black and white stripes, a gingham check fabric and a plaid style.
Courtney Love has signed on as the new muse of Givenchy, proving once and for all that image trumps beauty in our post-fashion age. Bad move if you ask me. Not only is she unattractive, she’s really not that interesting. But Love’s a supermodel of self-promotion. 'Givenchy is like me,' she tells the U.K. Telegraph. 'A legendary brand that has had its ups and downs.’ You’ve gotta wonder how the suits at Givenchy are going to talk the stage-diving songbird down when she balloons to her fighting weight mid-campaign.
They can always buy time by reviving the Stevie Nicks halter .
We've received such an awesome response to our "Caption the 'Nothing to Wear' print ad" contest that we want to give you more time to participate!
We've extended the deadline to January 3rd, so tell your friends, neighbors, and grandma to leave a comment on the original post. As always, be as funny, sarcastic, or serious as you like, and we'll award the one we love the most this fabulous Gucci bag.
Fashion Week Daily reports that Jennifer Lopez is planning to sue fashion designer Andy Hilfiger, brother of famed designer,Tommy Hilfiger, after their partnership took a turn for the worst once her clothing line, “Sweetface,” flopped at New York Fashion Week last year. Rumors are also circulating, that the partners began to disagree after JLo's hubby Marc Anthony became involved and that Hilfiger is planning to countersue.
The 16th richest woman in entertainment has paired up with Dolce & Gabbana to launch a "chic and feminine" spring wear line, called Bundchen by Dolce & Gabbana. With the super success of her sandal collection and savvy personal style, this line will be a winner!
After six years of discussions, WWD reports that Prada's CEO, Patrizio Bertelli will let their stocks loose on the public, most likely in Milan in 2008. Last we polled, you all were big Prada fans, so I'm sure, like myself, you are excited about the prospect of being able to own a piece of the actual company.
Freddie Mercury was second only to David Bowie as glam rock's most out-there personality, and now his short, but vibrant life will soon be getting the biopic treatment. Both Johnny Depp and Sasha Baron Cohen have been in talks to star in Robert DeNiro's film about the Queen frontman, who passed away at 45 in 1991 from an AIDS-related illness. Mercury is widely considered one of the greatest performers in British rock history and his stage presence would have been nothing without his flashy, often tacky, but never safe, wardobe. Depp has proven his fearless aptitude for playing oddballs. But like Mercury, Cohen is a Brit - and anyone brave enough to wear that green swimsuit from Borat deserves a shot at immortalizing England's beloved rock icon.
It seems that along with adopting third world kiddies, the eco-chic trend just keeps getting bigger and more stylish. Fashiontribes reports that the Sundance Film Festival has recently launched an online store with eco friendly items such as the Todd Oldham limited edition recycled messenger bag & recycled iPod case both featuring the 2007 festival banners in the design.
I personally cannot get enough of Rihanna right now. I clearly remember when this young lady was a Beyonce clone (bronzed weave, same gyrating dance moves, Mathew Knowles sold separately) but she has truly emerged as a stylish star in her own right. Bits from her interview include her so-called fling with Josh Hartnett, getting Americans hip to Barbados and the Aeon Flux inspiration behind her haircut.
This month's L'uomo Vogue features Snoop on its cover. While he is thin and has great cheekbones, Snoop has so little other fashion cred -- his imaginative use of bandanas aside -- that some of us are scratching our collective cornrow'd domes. We get the left-of-center thinking and nod at hipster irony, but given the Michael Jackson cover and now this, there's an eerie feeling the esteemed mag is just one more loopy cover away from becoming a paraody of itself. Who's next, Bobby Brown?
True fashionistas understand the simple beauty of the perfect winter white piece. I'm seriously digging how this gent paired his white trench with the black 'n white bike hat, while this young lady fiercely plays up her ethereal features, with this feathered Flapper style headdress.
At last count, I have over 25 pairs of boots - including two knee-high white leather boots, a chocolate pair of stiletto booties I spray painted metallic copper, and an over-the-knee-five-inch stiletto metallic gold Italian pair that cost me close to $500.00. The boots captured here are at the two extremes of style. The Prada boot shouts: "classic style, power & luxury," while the fuchsia pair screams: "adore me, love me, notice me." I love 'em both and I think any true fashionista would find both pairs gawk- worthy for different reasons.
Though Goldie Hawn is really the blonde diva that sets my heart a pitter-patter, Kate Hudson does look quite "Sunny California Girl" on this pastel filled January cover and makes me think of beaches, BBQ and free Brooklyn concerts; all of the things I love about the summer. Which is why, I think this would have made a better spring/summer cover instead of a winter one. During her interview she discusses her divorce, her “brotherly” relationship with Matthew McConaughey and her 70 lb weight gain during pregnancy.
When you dress this well naturally, the design deals can't come quick enough. With Top Shop under her belt, Kate expands to updating the Longchamp Legend bag, with "a boxy fit and red interior handpicked by Kate," Fashionista reports. It's hitting the stores next February. Note Kate here, selling it with some black skintight vinyl pants that can be worn by about 0.0000000001% of the population. Well, at least you can buy the bag.
Earnest Sewn and French footwear company Repetto are collaborating for limited-edition eco-friendly shoes as part of Barneys "Greencaste" line. Together they enlisted Cone Denim, the country's oldest denim factory (and the same one that's behind Loomstate's green jeans for Barneys), to ensure a 100% organic product. In fact throughout the entire weaving process, starch is the only addition to the natural fiber.
Stand back Febreze there is a new scent in town. Label Cimarron Jeans has recently created scratch and sniff colored denim with a matching scent. The yellow jeans have a lemon scent, the orange jeans are scented with mandarin tones, green denim is minty fresh and pink smells of fresh berries. According to Cimarron’s designer, Tiziano Folgia, the scent is only released when the denim is rubbed and the scent should last up to 20 washes. I love this concept! Like many busy fashionistas, I wait until I'm down to my granny panties and non-matching socks before I bother with doing the laundry, so having jeans that "re-scent" themselves, is an ideal solution.
In response to the trend of customers reusing shopping bags for non-chic necessities (carrying laundry to the cleaners or lunch to work) a heated competition is under way in retailing to offer the most durable, fashionable shopping bags that can be reused by consumers long after they make a purchase. Luxe national chains, such as, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, and Scoop are investing millions of dollars in new flourishes like plastic-coated paper and heavy fabric cord handles, with brands aiming to make each and every one of us bag-a-licious billboards.

Buzzing around town this week, I took special notice of the jewels that partygoers were adorning their hands with. Trends included chunky, geometric shaped pieces for men and multiple vintage rings of pearl, stone and opal for women.
It seems modeling’s not the only way to turn good looks into revenue. British supermodel and reality star Sophie Anderton has been busted for working as a $20,000-a-night call girl. In tapes produced by a British tabloid, the leggy lingerie model snorts dope and dishes on buddy Kate Moss, while doing what it takes to make the mortgage payments on her new Notting Hill digs. Looks like American homeowners aren’t the only ones feeling the credit crunch.
As someone who takes pride in being a bit left of fashion and therefore a heavy "rule" breaker when it comes to my personal style and my critique of other's wardrobe choices; I still find myself on the fence about the surfacing trend of the makeshift "winter sandal", especially when worn with black opaque tights. On one hand, I think, why not get some extra mileage out of those sandals? On the other hand, I have yet to buy my first pair of peep toe pumps that are all the rage this fall because I honestly feel that toes should only be on display during the summer months.
Okay, I have to be honest and confess that I wasn't even aware of this trend until fellow blogger Malcolm did a post about Pharrell rocking a custom made Birkin murse. Now, of course, I've seen them everywhere on both my g-boys and my straights. But as a female first and a fashionista second, I'm not so sure how comfortable I feel with men rocking oversized shoulder bags.
After her incredible catwalk showing in China and spot-on metamorphosis into a true-blue Cover Girl, 21-year-old California girl Saleisha seemed an apt choice to win "Top Model." I have to say though, if the judges were really looking for "top model" potential - and not cutesy, cover-of-Seventeen potential - they would have gone with Jenah, whose wounded honesty and consistently flawless photos, for me, scream high-fashion. I think Tyra should get real and repackage the show as "America's Next Top Cover Girl" because, let's face it, this franchise isn't turning out the next Naomi, Linda or Gisele. Come to think of it, "Top Model" cast-offs Adrianne Curry and nutbar Lisa D'Amato are way more famous (ok, infamous) than any previous cycle winners. Let's hope Saleisha makes the most of her 15 minutes.
Several seasons ago Donna Karan's menswear collection was accessorized with a wide variety of brooches; from small classic, silver brooches to mini, swashbuckling swords. However, this trend never seemed to hit the mainstream until recently. While out at the David Barton Gym event the other night, I noticed these lovely gems. The combination of the bling and strategic placement of the brooches on these gents, was both dapper and fabulous!
It appears that gold medals are no longer the badges of honors for athletes-jewelry is.
“Finisher’s jewelry is part of a movement in retail and in events — that you don’t need to look and feel like a tomboy if you’re an athlete,” said Paula Harkin, a race director and specialty store owner.
Though Nike was among the first to dole out jewels instead of medals, the idea is catching on, this year alone winners were given a variety of accessories from dainty Tiffany sterling silver pendants to silver charms on leather cord bracelets.
Inspired by trips that span the globe, model Iman is gearing up to launch “Global Chic,” a new line of fashion accessories and jewelry exclusively on HSN and hsn.com. The collection will include a replica of her anniversary ring, her vintage engagement ring as well as her signature handbag, an oversized tote, and a leopard printed evening bag. I've had the pleasure to meet Iman and she is absolutely amazing. However, I must admit that I'm a bit surprised and a little disappointed that this collection isn't linked to a charity as she is known for speaking out against many global injustices/causes as well as an active spokesperson for the "Keep A Child Alive" organization.
Glamour magazine and Tommy Hilfiger have teamed up to produce “Glamour Reel Docs,” the latest incarnation of “Glamour Reel Moments,” the magazine’s successful short film series. In celebration of the launch of his newest fragrance "Dreaming", Hilfiger is on board as an executive producer of this new documentary form concept, which not only follows three women as they achieve their greatest dreams but promotes female storytelling and gives women in Hollywood a chance to direct.
Between the America's Next Top Model finale, Bravo's acquisition of Janice Dickinson's Modeling Agency, and the network's upcoming Make Me a Supermodel, I'm starting to come down with Model Fatigue. Or is it Model Reality Show Fatigue? On a side note, I'm digging the platforms Niki Taylor's wearing in the Make Me a Supermodel commercial.
Between the male models from the Tiki Barber challenge and the real women that modeled this week, I'm wondering if the professionals should be the only ones who have a crack at the Elle spread. After all, as Heidi says every week, "Models, this is a competition for you too." And so far, the competing models have had two weeks off. They better work.
Speaking of the professionals versus the real, for the most part, the judges played nice this week as far as their critiques, but Michael Kors went there a lil' bit when he noted that Elisa's layered design would've been better suited to a 5'11" model. Which begs the other question of the week: Would the clothes that look bad on the professional models look good on real women? What/who is a 'real woman' anyway?
While watching the ANTM finale tonight -- congratulations, Saleisha! -- I couldn't help but wonder if Miss Jay and Paris Vogue's November cover model, Andre J have any relation. And while I'm asking, doesn't Saleisha look a lot like Tyra?
I've loved this woman, since Boys Don't Cry and she looks absolutely strong, beautiful and fashionable on this cover. Inside she discusses, being in love with her boyfriend, former agent John Campisi, her horrible NYC apt hunting adventures, the 45 supplements she takes every day in addition to her vitamin injections--wow--45?? and her rebuttal to Jeff Robinov’s, the President of Production at Warner Bros., alleged claim that they will no longer be doing movies with female leads due to recent box office duds.
In between watching the crazy mixing of glamorous Christmas themed drag queens and A-listers such as Marc Jacobs and Sarah Jessica Parker tip-toe their way around dumbbells at the David Barton Gym's annual toy drive last night, I noticed a few fashionistas wearing a kilt-like skirt. Personally, I'm not exactly digging this look as it tends to drag down your booty and give you a non-chic Little House on the Prairie feel.
I'm not exactly sure which designer made these corduroy faux riding pants, but I'm digging the unusual placement of the fine animal print figures individually stitched onto them-fashionistas will notice the use of spiders and dragonflies on these pair.
Three generations of Presley women hung out with each other at the Led Zeppelin tribute to Ahmet Ertegun concert in London yesterday, as did Jerry Hall and Mick's kids, Georgina and James. All evidence of gray was dyed, but Priscilla could have committed to the look by loosening that scarf and swapping her blazer for something like this. Kate, why didn't you tell her?
Last we polled, you guys were loving the elbow-length glove, but what say you about the fingerless Madonna variety that Kylie Minogue performed in at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo today? I don't keep my manicure fresh enough to rock these on the regular, but I'd slip 'em on for the next '80s party I'm invited to. Speaking of, what do you think about studded gloves?
If Betsey Johnson gets her asking price of $3.6M for her Fifth Ave, 1,660-square-foot, two bedroom, one bathroom, open-plan penthouse, I'm sure her famed runway cartwheels will be a few feet higher at next season's shows. The hot-pink glam pad includes ebonized floors, a floating staircase that leads to a 1,000-square-foot private roof deck, and a claw-foot bathtub with "slightly loopy Old World plumbing reminiscent of a suite at the Ritz."
With holiday party season in full swing, am I the only one who feels like she's got a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear?
Help is a comment away.
Leave a comment on this post captioning the "Nothing to Wear" print ad below -- be as funny, sarcastic, or serious as you like! - and we'll award the one we love the most with this fabulous Gucci bag to strategically place over your parts.
Right on the heels of their footwear collection "Pastry", Vanessa and Angela Simmons are in plans to expand the collection to include handbags and apparel. The apparel collection will feature embroidery, glitter, foils, denim, dresses and tracksuits in sizes small through X-large and sizes 24-32 for the bottoms while the handbag line will offer colorful, and fun takes on bags such as the hobo and the messenger. I'm not the biggest fan of the shoes, but I truly love the fact that these young ladies are making power moves.
Fashionistas, wouldn't this man sans the underwear be the perfect stocking stuffer?! Not only is he gorgeous but I have to agree with Armani:
"David is truly a modern day icon in that his fame extends well beyond the realm of soccer. He represents a notion of modern masculinity: as a sports hero, husband and father. He is also a man with a great sense of style.”
Mrs. Beckham, better stay on top of her game.
If you've never had the pleasure of stumbling upon DirtyPatrick.com/Fashion prepare to be titillated by a User-initiated, stop-motion fashion documentary which features Barbie in a Face / Paper Magazine-style editorial. Since last November, Dirty Patrick has been documenting the personal style of one real New Yorker daily, per week, and animating said person's style in super cool photo montages. Barbie is this week's subject. While you're checking out his site, visit his pilot experience, DirtyPatrick.com which features mini-vids documenting the DP's refusal to wear the same shirt twice.
Maybelline New York just announced that supermodel Jessica White will be the new face of the product. White joins Maybelline New York’s prestigious roster, which includes Christy Turlington, Erin Wasson, Adriana Lima, Tomiko Fraser, Julia Stegner, and Zhang Ziyi. Fashionistas will recall White on the famed 2003 cover of Sports Illustrated, as well as apperances on the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show catwalk and in videos for singer John Legend and rapper Jay-Z.
Amy's mom might not like her daughter's druggie look but the fashion world still does. Lagerfeld presented his Paris-Londres fashion show last week again using Ms. Winehouse as his muse. IHT's Suzy Menkes reported models flying down the runway in mussed beehives and a slash of black eyeliner. The clothes: "Highlighted with Gothic crosses, gilded lace gloves or just a fringed front to a maxi tweed coat to express Winehouse's edgy unraveling." What happens if this chick ever cleans up, we wonder? Can she still be a style icon?
Upon the release of the Sex and the City flick, mass market lingerie company Cosabella will be licensing new underwear supposedly based on the personalities of the four divas. If this is correct, the line sounds like it will have an intimate piece for your every mood: from your lazy Sunday tee (Miranda) to your bootycall see-through thong (Samantha).
Recognizing the burst of continued growth in speciality denim, the first Hilfiger Denim store opened in NYC last week in Soho. Designed with a mod 70's feel the store features mirror balls, Eero Aarnio bubble chairs, vintage posters, a state-of-the-art DJ booth and supposedly sports black leather rugs and black walls--black walls--is that a 70's look? The collection, which is available for the first time in America includes a special line of selvedge denim, priced at $250.00 per item.
I just read that Christian Lacroix celebrated their 20th Anniversary AND opened a store on Fifth Ave this past Wednesday -- and I just realized I haven't been up on the designer or his collections in a minute. Bad Fashionista! I'm reacquainting myself here and here.
Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej's recent appearance in a powder pink ensemble spurred a craze for the color across the country, with fashionable nationalists mobbing shops in search of blush-colored shirts and slacks. If the divine monarch's mellow turn after years of somber suits has shoppers in a frenzy it's because this is a fashion statement from on high. In our own country, the success of this look bodes well for pre-owned car salesmen, televangelists and retirees.
