A Funky Good Time

S5004698.JPGUntil recently, I had made it a personal rule to stay away from predictable (read: boring), black, knee-high boots; however after noticing the rise of really funky, creative and durable black boots on the streets of NYC (take note of the tassels above) I'm currently on a slight hunt for the perfect eclectic pair.

That's One Way to Get Around Fashion Week

LOVE_RIDES.jpg
With so many shows happening outside Bryant Park's tents this year, we were both creeped out and delighted to find that K-Y® Brand LOVE CARS will be circling the tents to chauffeur editors limping in their Louboutins anywhere they want to go in Manhattan for free. Of course, the joy rides will include "hot tips on how to heat-up on a cold winter night." Look for the love mobiles starting February 4th.

The Return of the Babydoll Dress

S5004767.JPGI tried; I really did try to avoid noticing this trend. But alas, the camera doesn't lie--unless you've employed the help of an ANTM type of beauty team--the horrid Babydoll Dress is back despite the fact that it does nothing style wise but make women look as though they are on permanent maternity leave without a support bra in sight. The hipster captured here, spruced up her "sack" with unusual accessories and an edgy haircut.

The Girl's Got It

TyraNew.jpg You've gotta love Tyra Banks, even if you hate Tyra Banks: The erstwhile Angel and current talk-show queen has just scored another major deal with the CW, this time to create a "Devil Wears Prada"-style reality show about the (now overexposed) world of fashion magazines. Hmmm. I'm trying to think what could possibly be new and different about Tyra's take on the genre. Having worked in the New York magazine world, I can tell you that boring editorial meetings, stale coffee and long hours are pretty much what make up the workday. That said, I'd love a show that depicts the monotonous duldrums of this brutal bizness. As long as all the girls are pretty, skinny and dressd to the nines, of course.

A Jesus Piece

S5004652.JPGSans the "blood diamonds," it would appear that Mr. West has made it quite popular among both the hip-hop and hipster elite to rock a "Jesus Piece." Here this daring fashionista sports hers on a pair of swanky, buttery soft, (I felt them) leather, hand gloves.

A Bit of Ribbon

headbandsmall.jpgWith the return of the headband trend, I've noticed that a variety of materials are being used to make them: zippers, feathers and, here, a blood-red, wide piece of satin ribbon. Take note of how she's wearing it as both a tie and a headband. You too can rock this look with a little help from Eugenia Kim.

The Winter Summer Dress

purpledresssmall.jpgWith the erosion of the ozone layer, we are all experiencing dramatic weather changes, sometimes in a matter of hours. This can be a major style dilemma for many fashionistas as it can get tricky trying to put together a daily wardrobe that's both fun, functional, stylish and multi-weather proof. My personal solution has been to wear my very fun summer pieces with standard winter basics: tights, turtlenecks, etc.

Mischa Barton for Iceberg

icesmall.jpgThe other night I was at an event, which shall remain nameless, where I overheard a few models complaining about the continued trend of celebs getting all the best campaigns over "real models." As I dutifully applied my fifth layer of lip gloss, I thought to myself, "YWhatever." However, as I continue to hear about this celeb and that celeb becoming the face of various brands, I have to slightly agree with those ladies. But Mischa does look hot, right?

The Fashion Show Must Go On

Zulema-Griffin_56979231.jpg[photo courtesy of Ray Tamarra/GettyImages.com] Indie designer, Zulema Griffin on why she's unveiling her Fall '08 collection on YouTube and MySpace.

You’ve been showing outside Bryant Park for the past couple of seasons now. Why don’t you show at the tents?
One, I’ve never been invited to show at the tents. In addition to that, I don’t have the funds. A small tent is $28,000 -- that includes chairs... I also think because of the themes of my shows, nothing I’ve done has lent itself to a traditional tent show.

What made you decide to show your Fall ’08 collection on YouTube and MySpace as opposed to some cool Manhattan space?
My mother actually passed away right before Christmas and we had to plan for an unexpected funeral so it became a money issue. I had planned to show in a church... I could have folded and said ‘do it next season,’ but my mother taught me you gotta make it happen.

With Target’s recent Virtual Fashion show and your decision to show online, how do you think technology will figure into showcasing fashion in the future?
I think technology will completely change the industry – whether that’s for good or bad remains to be seen. I say for right now, for a designer like me, considering how tight-knit and incestuous the industry is, technology is my saving grace.

Zulema's show airs on YouTube February 3rd at 9am. While you're there, check out our YouTube channel.

Bryant Park v. YouTube

Zulema Fall 08 invite.jpgIf you're an indie designer trying to make your way to Bryant Park, you've got a couple options: Project Runway or a benefactor who's got an in with Fern Mallis, Fashion VP at IMG, the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Season 2 alum, Zulema Griffin tried the former and doesn't have the latter so she created another option: YouTube. We spy a trend... do you?

Check out our interview with Zulema.

POSH Gets Naked for Marc

vbformjtee.jpgRight on the heels of her neo-classic, Spring '08 Marc Jacobs' ads, WWD reports POSH takes it all off for these iconic charity tees designed by Marc Jacobs for a skin cancer charity-- at $35 a pop, I'm sure they will be grabbed up pretty quickly this week when they go on sale at the designer's boutiques; and yes, I'm gonna get one.

threeasfoursmall.jpgOr at least that's the rumor circulating around the blogsphere. If the rumor is correct the design team is trailing along other brands such as Thakoon, Doo.Ri and Roland Mouret, who've also done some pretty fun collaborations in the past with the GAP. It will be interesting to see this sleek, sexy brand melded with the GAP's basic Americana style.

A Return to Vreeland's Vogue

dolls1.jpgStyle.com dubs Galliano's Spring 2008 couture "high-society sixties hauteur," and amongst the platform heels and ink-soaked satins, you can see it. A whirlwind of sculpted '60s updos, ladies-who-lunch gloves and forty-pound Twiggy lashes have the stamp of legendary Vogue editor Diane Vreeland (which Galliano gave props to). If this makes it through to us over here in H&M land, we say bring it on.

Art Imitates Celebs

vb.jpgMy reaction when I first came across this photo on PopCrunch was a mixture of awe and horror. Awe at the fact that all three ladies: Dita Von Treese, Claudia Schiffer, and Victoria Beckham were able to hold their poses so still and lifeless; and horror at the fact that they looked like mannequins. Between the bug-eyed shades, the porcelain skin--save for VB's orange hue-- I really can't decide if this photo is a work of art or just freaky.

What Do You Wear A High-Waisted Yellow Skirt With?

A high-waisted denim skirt the color of a canary is one of those things that sounds great in fashion theory -- but when it's the only thing not in your hamper, what do you wear it with? Our friends at Factory PR suggested going "sexy-tary" with it -- think cashmere cardigan, stilletos, and specs. What would you wear with this skirt? And speaking of, are you even into colored denim?

Colored Jeans: Thoughts?

FreshInkSkirt-crop.jpgOn a showroom visit this past Wednesday at Factory PR (they handle press for Tracy Reese, Yoana Baraschi and a host of other lust-have labels), they showed me this Tweetie bird yellow, high-waisted denim skirt from Fresh Ink's Pre-Fall line -- from a rack lined with Crayola-colored gems. I'm ready to play in the crayon box, and have been having particular fun wearing my marigold and purple booties with otherwise slate or black ensembles. When it comes to colored jeans, what say you?

Goody Two-Shoes

marta_1.jpg
By applying transformational garment concepts pioneered by designers like “refuge wear” artist Lucy Orta to the pedestrian footwear industry, the folks at Camileon Heels have launched a line of collapsible heel shoes that should have style-conscious professionals slamming down their orders like eBay addicts all set to “Buy It Now.” Instead, the frumpy pumps and church lady slings are probably collecting dust on a warehouse shelf somewhere in Pennsylvania. As it stands, unless a forward-thinking design firm like Stella McCartney's or Muccia Prada’s rethinks this not-bad idea, Camileon Heels will likely go the way of the skort.

Kate Moss Takes Legal Action

katesmall.jpgDue to recent scandalous reports by British gossip rag, News Of the World of Kate Moss participating in an orgy as part of her 34th birthday celebrations, involving two other women and a male while a group of four or five people watched, the model diva is suing the tabloid. According to her legal rep, it’s nothing more than “false and defamatory allegations in the newspaper relating to her 34th birthday celebrations.” And you know what? I believe her--I mean honestly we all know that would've been up on YouTube in a matter of hours. In other important Moss news, check out these boots to steal her look.

Sun-dancing

Mischa.jpgI love Sundance Film Festival week, if for no other reason than to see photos of celebrities looking awkward in their cold-weather duds. I mean, is there ever really a way for a ghetto-fabulous guy like Puffy to rock a, um, puffy vest and not look like a dork? It's also amusing to see who among my favorite actresses forgets there's actually snow in Park City and still dresses like she's going for Whole Foods run in Beverly Hills, or, better yet, see who actually pulls off the Utah look. I always wonder if Hollywood types have that one closet for "Sundance clothes," or if they spring for new duds every year? Hmmmm. My guess is the latter, as long as they don't have to pay for them of course.

They can't cure every fashion emergency -- as Simone and Victorya found -- but they certainly work with a myriad of looks.

Surfacing Trend: The T-Shirt Necklace

S5004770.JPGIt appears that this season, more and more accessories are being made in unusual materials. Here this funky fashionista rocks what I call a "T-shirt necklace," a piece of fabric fashioned into a necklace by simply knotting and twisting the fabric at even intervals. I'm also digging how she layered it with the horseshoe piece.

The Skinny Tie-Scarf

S5004391.JPGS5004681.JPGDuring my usual rounds of trendspotting, I've noticed that a traditional tie and a traditional scarf has been replaced with the tie-scarf. Now I don't know for certain if this is a new trend, but I absolutely dig it. The trick to finessing this looks seems to be utilizing a rather thin/skinny but textured piece of extremely long fabric and then knotting it in a similar fashion as you would a tie. If you too are digging this look check out this DVF scarf.

She Wears the Pants

hill.jpgWho will fashionistas vote for? After Hillary backed out of a Vogue shoot for fear she'd look too feminine, Anna Wintour clapped back at her in her February address to her loyal constituents. "The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying," Wintour says, adding that power suits are played out -- a "bridge for a generation of women to reach boardrooms filled with men." (Hillary can't win with the fashion elite. Remember her cleavage controversy last year?) Interestingly, Robin Givhan almost mirrors Wintour's sentiments. Either way, Hillary's clothes are almost always translated into gender politics. Which makes us wonder exactly what Vogue was going to put her in. A Lanvin frock? Skinny jeans and a baby doll blouse? We're dying to know. Oh Hillary. You should stun them all by rocking a fierce bag to your next speech.

Parachute Pants, You're Back!

corinaparapants.jpgAt Flypaper we mostly concentrate on women's style, but it's hard to ignore the unisex appeal of Dior Homme--particularly now when Hedi Slimane's replacement, Kris van Asshe, is trying to bring back the ill-conceived parachute pant. Fashion Week Daily and Style.com both commented on Asshe's new gothed-up version at the current Paris men's fashion shows, the latter even namechecking the Thin White Duke's baggy-pant phase as another source of inspiration. But Bowie only looks Bowie on Bowie. You know what this is going to translate to for us regular folk. Z. Cavaricci, I missed you not.

Hairy Kate and Trashley Trollsen

Olsens resized.jpggerbils resized.jpg
PETA’s nasty ad campaign decrying "Hairy Kate and Trashley Trollsen” for wearing fur and including it in their clothes lines seems as wrongheaded as style editors zeroing in on their “edgy” style and signature "homeless" look. Adult gerbils routinely shred scarves and sweaters to make nests and keep warm. What the media should concern itself with is the lack of a contingency plan should these two start multiplying.

H&M's Design Shuffle

asjsmall.jpgThe Swedish retail giant of disposable chic wares has replaced Margareta van den Bosch with Ann-Sofie Johansson as head of design reports Fashion Week Daily. Van den Bosch, 65, the creator of fast fashion --deliveries made to stores weekly-- will continue to handle their designer collaborations exclusively. With Van den Bosch handling both the men's and women's divisions for over a decade, this is a major design change for H&M. Though I'm not a big H&M fan, it will be interesting to see if the look, feel and style of their collections will be vastly different with Johansson at the helm.

Size Matters

jeansmall.jpgI love when a legitimate news organization writes about one of my biggest pet peeves. Today's? Inconsistent sizing in women's clothing. Forbes.com is reporting that a very savvy young lady named Melissa Adelman has taken wacked-out retail sizing and used it to create her genius online service, Size Me Up. Here you can input sizing info from those best-fitting garments in your closet to see what size (gulp) you really are at most retailers. If you're anything like me, you shop where you're the smallest (hello Ann Taylor!), so this handy service not only tells you where else you're a 6, but where you're a 12 so you can, you know, like totally avoid those stores.

One For All?

Kit_Ricky.jpg

The judges' rationale for saying 'auf weidersehn' to Kit eludes me. She has consistently created smart, forward designs while, Ricky, who has consistently turned out wrinkled, gaping, poorly put-together, eh pieces was spared yet again. But I digress... The question is:

Isaac Mizrahi to Lead at Liz Claiborne

isaacmizrahi.jpgOkay, it's official, Liz Claiborne is stepping up its game. On Monday they announced that John Bartlett would design their mens sportswear collection and now Isaac Mizrahi will lead the creative direction of their flagship brand. The next thing we know Snoop, POB and Kate Moss will be featured in their ads. Liz Claiborne is definitely a brand to watch in '08.

The Overexposed Bra

overexposedbra.jpgAs I prepare my wardrobe for NYC Fashion Week, my one urgent request to the wonderful bevy of indie designers creating a few custom pieces for me is: "Save me from the 80's!" Though I am a passionate fan of all things spandex, fuchsia and pointy-toed, for me the revival of the 80's is officially done. However, there are some who would argue differently --hence-- the return of the exposed bra.

Fashion Fiasco

beyoncesmall.jpgPoor Beyonce. Who can't relate to showing up front row at the Versace show in Milan and having your bodyguard accidentally piss off someone really important, like Tommy Fazio, the fashion director at Bergdorf's? So badly that he canceled his post-show appointment with the fashion house? These kinds of flubs happen to us all the time; we never mean any harm. But it's funny how these little slights from us and our super-famous friends actually affect fashion. (Remember in 2006, when Pharrell's bodyguard accidentally pissed off the gays at the GQ party?) Luckily, we know exactly what to do in this situation: fly them out, give lots of air kisses and offer a nice gift from Bluefly.

Unleash Your Inner Animal

S5004425.JPGS5004440.JPGBuzzing around town last night, I noticed the return of animal printed pieces. What's a bit different this time around though is the use of a variety of color patterns and actual animal prints. Take note of the maroon leopard cardigan and neon green faux python leggings.

Pricked Pocket

Spreckley.jpgBritish artist Paddy Hartley, whose embroidered WW II “Spreckley” jackets and masks (pictured here), are among the standout pieces in the current Pricked: Extreme Embroidery exhibit at New York's Museum of Arts & Design, has launched a bespoke wallet line. The Cold War couturier will personally craft a snazzy satchel from images provided by customers wanting to add some flash to their cash. Whether they're a mercenary, a merger of art and commerce, or a stylish take on the five-finger discount hardly matters. If Hartley's wallets are as well-executed as his Spreckley line, they're liable to go guerilla.

The Lohan "Diva" Tee

lohantee.jpgI honestly have to give it up to the designer behind this one. They truly captured the essence of the boozing diva, right on down to the perch of the sunglasses on her nose, with this graphic tee. Fashionista reports that it was actually Forever 21 --yea I'm shocked too-- that produced this baby. Now my only question: Did they actually receive a license to use Lohan's image or did they just rip it off like they've done with everything else?

Diane von Furstenberg Does Footwear

dvfshoesmall.jpgJust in time for spring, DVF has launched her first full line of shoes. Wanting to create "power shoes" for women on-the-go, the 12 piece collection is based on the principles of strength, support, and style. Details include rubber soles stamped with the DVF signature logo, comforting inserts combined with metallic leather, and signature prints done on denim, canvas and suede. The collection will arrive in stores in mid-February and be priced at $195-$350. Check out this video interview I did a few months back with the phenomenal DVF.

Victoria & Marc In a Bag

beckham11408.jpgbeckhaminshoebox.jpgBy now, I'm sure you've all seen the hilarious photo of Victoria Beckham in a Marc Jacobs bag with only her legs and funky shoes visible. Just like the first released photo, Victoria and Marc really have some fun with the poses, angles and clothing -- I'm especially digging the photo where she's coming out of a shoe box. These ads are honestly some of the most refreshing, creative, original and bold visuals I've seen in a bit.

Heatherette Cancels Fashion Show

S5003282.JPG"Say it ain't so!" Yours truly is done. I absolutely adore, adore, adore this collection and the show despite the drama of getting in,is a highlight of Fashion Week. Fashionista reports that the duo is not commenting on why they are canceling the show but are promising to return in September and will be around for their M.A.C. for Heatherette launch this Spring. There are also rumors of them having an after-party this season, even without the show. I think I need to lay down.

John Bartlett goes to Liz Claiborne

johnbartlettsmall.jpgWWD reports today that the negotiations between John Bartlett and Liz Claiborne are now official: Bartlett has signed on to design a men's sportswear line for the drab Liz Claiborne line. According to an earlier CNNMoney.com report, they're also looking for a womenswear designer to revitalize that branch and approached Tracey Reese last fall. (Needed indeed: How many people rush to buy Liz Claiborne these days?) Also hired to give Claiborne a lift: Tim Gunn, chief creative officer since March 2007.
