THEY DON'T CALL, THEY DON'T WRITE (anymore!)

MINDY_PROJECT-RUNWAY2crop.JPGMINDY_PROJECT-RUNWAY4crop.JPG
Just call me Deep Throat. (I’ll explain why in a sec.)

About three months ago, my CEO called me into her office to say she had a "special project" for me. Because I designed the Bluefly Accessory Wall, I was going to be the sole "connection" to the Project Runway finalists who would be accessorizing their Fashion Week collections with Bluefly shoes and shooting all the final workroom scenes at Bluefly.

(Don't miss our receptionist, Kelly Dupuis’ hilarious account of the PR shoot at Bluefly!)

I was to tell no one, sign Non-Disclosure Agreements in triplicate, and basically go into full cloak and dagger mode while helping the Finalists pull their collections together with Bluefly footwear. Now, that's all fine and well except that I work in a full exposed cubicle, in an office full of obsessed fashionistas and SICKLY obsessed PR fans. How was I NOT gonna breathe a word of this to anyone four weeks into the season? I knew everything. And everyone around me knew nothing.

MINDY_PROJECT-RUNWAYcrop.JPGHere's how it went: each finalist (then there were five) was given my phone number and email address. As in, don't call us, we'll call you. Slowly, the communication began. It was as if they'd been in a bubble -- which they were -- and so excited to talk about their collections with SOMEONE. They were total non-divas, super humble and grateful for the mega-shoe hook-up.

As the convos progressed we all became super chummy and actually couldn't wait to meet. They kept saying "Oh, Mindy you're the best, when are we finally going to meet?" which was pretty cool. In my regular day-to-day it's rare that I get a phone call from anyone besides my mom -- and now, all of a sudden, I'm ringing off the hook, hunched over in my cube whispering in code, a key participant in one of my favorite shows.

There were times where it got a little crazy and I had to sneak into a conference room for some private time with Chris or Jillian to decide between the thigh-high boots and the stilettos. But, overall, what started out as a daunting task actually became the highlight of my job hands down.

MINDY_PROJECT-RUNWAY7crop.JPGWhen it was finally time -- the Magical Elves (the production company behind PR) arrived, shuttling the designers up the freight elevator for Day 1 of the Finale Shoot at our offices. I'm not gonna lie to you. I was SUPER excited and actually got a little dressed up.

As they got in the elevator, one of my co-workers happened to be downstairs sneaking a cigarette. She said hi to Chris and without skipping a beat he said "OMG---are you MINDY?"

Not yet...( wasn’t to see them till later that day under very glamorous circumstances when Jillian and I shared a sink in the bathroom.

So, the shoot went on and our offices were taken over by the PR crew and cast. Everyone (especially my cubicle neighbors, after all that fuss!) was excited to be in constant buzz mode for a full week.

MINDY_PROJECT-RUNWAY3crop.JPGI must say that I also (kinda sorta) felt like a minor celebrity --- people were asking me to get photos, autographs and they knew I was the girl to do it!

Agent Dorf at your service.

But tonight, I'm back to being me, watching at home like everyone else in real time eager to find out which one of my new BFFs take it all home! My bet’s on Rami.

I must say that AGENT DORF was pretty crafty keeping her secret documents hidden in the cabinent over her desk!!

Girl, wish I was you!

Posted by: Banessa at March 6, 2008 02:58 PM

Not to disparage the lad but HOW did that Christian win???? Jillian's and Rami's clothes were FAR and away more beauitful and functional,

Posted by: DSM at March 7, 2008 07:07 AM

I agree, I was surprised to see Christian win. He is supertalented but his line was not close to being as diversed and meticiously crafted as Jillians, and maybe Rami. I think Nina Garcia was enchanted by Christian and I think she wanted the spread in Elle to look a certain way. When can we buy Jillians clothes on Bluefly?

Posted by: AnLi at March 7, 2008 10:09 AM

You won't be able to buy Jillian or Rami's line on Bfly becuase they didn't win! Only Christians!

Posted by: laura at March 7, 2008 03:37 PM

I adored Christian's line! He blew away the competition. Did you hook him up with those "nine inch high" shoes that Lea tried on? And when can I buy his stuff on BlueFly?

Posted by: Alexa at March 7, 2008 09:16 PM

I have been sewing/creating for over 50 years and I am telling you, that little Christian is a genius. He is a prodigy. He not only creates art, he is art. The young man is FIERCE.

Posted by: Grandma Gayle at March 7, 2008 09:29 PM

Grandma Gayle, you are so right! I have skirts like those Jillian made in my closet already, and could make the ones I don't have pretty easily. Christian, on the other hand, I just want to spend time with so I can figure out how he manages to create such incredible garments in such a short period of time. Both his design and sewing skills are brilliant.

I was totally shocked when Christian won. I want to know what kind of drugs the judges were on to pick him. I personnaly thinking they felt sorry for him.

Sweet Pea did not won, but her fashion line is on Bluefly.com.

AGENT DORF,

I am so glad to finally read your story and know who you are because... As I religiously watched the show, I would look around my living room and think about the decorating I need to be doing in my new home. It has been looking a little depressing! Then, presto, like magic - my eyes were glued to the shoe wall on Project Runway. It has inspired my living room decor, can you believe it? I'm putting up a wall of Ikea shelves with a great paint color - to be a living room focal point - just like your wall.

So now you do home decor as well... :)

I want Jillians and Rami's designs!!!!!

Posted by: Gina at March 8, 2008 09:45 PM

I was so happy Christian won. He really and honestly deserve it. Rami's collection was just like the show pieces same thing, draping. It started to get a little cliche`. Jullian's collection was like ok very nice and ready to wear, but a lot of those pieces I've seen in fashion magazines before, nothing really major.I myself know how to sew draft patterns and alight sketching. The judges made the right choice. Christian's collection was totally creative and innovative. Great job Christian.

I have been a fan of project runway since it's beginning... I was impressed with Jillian's line, there is no doubt. Her jean dress with the dreamy blue see-thru shirt is my favorite design of the season, I wish she had brought more of that to the runway, because, when I saw Christians show, I was BLOWN AWAY! He knew he was putting on a show, from head to toe. It could have been in Paris, Italy, New York or anywhere. When the collection was shown in progression, it had a cohesion that was unmatched by any other designer to date. The feather dress at the end gave the ka-boom that a show finish needs. Christian is amazing.

Congradulations goes out to Christian, he has an amazing talent......

I am so glad Christian won. When his designs were presented at fashion week, I was BLOWN AWAY, he is a prodigy and a genius. He deserved to win!
