slick rick final.jpgMeatpacking district auction house Phillip de Pury & Company hosts a milestone event on October 1 -- the first ever auction of historic hip hop jewelry. According to the press release it will include pieces from hip hop's golden era (1980-early 1990s), through the East-West Coast battle, up to the current mainstream blingerrific 2000s. "Hip Hop's Crown Jewels" will include in the sale iconic pieces like: Biz Markie's black and white diamond "headphones pendant," MC Lyte's Nefertiti ring and necklace (from her "ChaCha" video), Slick Rick's multicolor diamond-set eye patch, and Notorious BIG's first prized possession, his yellow gold and stainless steel Rolex. Hooray, we say. It's about time hip hop's cultural value (and monetary, natch) was recognized by the auction house establishments. The world needs only so many many Jackie Onassis fire sales. A portion of the proceeds will go to Russell Simmons' Rush Community Affairs.

Appears to be a parochial apex moment for the pope to add to his collection. Apparently the vatican city needs all that pomp and circumstantial gold and ceremonial garb more than the starving multitudes it COULD help. "Oh, GOD, the humanity!"
