The International Center of Photography's New Year's Resolution

Calling all Fashion Geeks! This January, the International Center of Photography is kicking off a yearlong ode to fashion photography. The "Year of Fashion" will feature seven exhibits over the course of '09 that explore the impact of fashionable images on women and culture from the 1920s to today. I'm particularly looking forward to "Weird Beauty" (opens January 16th) which will examine, among other things, how graphic design has changed the game (think overzealous Photoshopping/airbrushing), and the Richard Avedon retrospective -- though I'm not looking forward to waiting all the way till May 15th for the Avedon exhibit. Now you know my resolution: I will be more patient... I will be more patient...

This Is Not a Fashion Photograph

Shots so stylish they double as fashion photography. Gordon Parks, Bruce Davidson, Walker Evans, and Robert Mapplethorpe images, to name a few.

Munkacsi's Lost Archive

Vintage and modern prints from the Hungarian fashion photographer best-known for shooting athletes and models in motion using split-second timing and radical cropping. For Munkacsi, process was the key. Some of his original negatives will be on exhibit too, many still in their boxes with Munkacsi's handwritten annotations.

Avedon: Fashion Photographs, 1944-2000

More than 200 works -- vintage prints, contact sheets, magazine layouts, and archival material -- by Avedon from his days at Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, The New Yorker, and beyond.

David Seidner: Paris Fashion, 1945
[May 15 - September 6, 2009]
Seidner's photos of dolls wearing Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Pierre Balmain et al aren't just any ol' high fashion Barbies. The just-over-2-feet-tall wire-frame dolls were restored after they were rediscovered in 1990 and restyled from the original looks they wore in 1944 when war-torn French fashionistas put together a small exhibit at the Théâtre de la Mode and commissioned designers to create couture outfits for them.
