Calling All NYC Hippie Chicks!

India-Arie-Bluefly-FlyPaper-blog.jpgIt's gonna be funky patterns, chunky jewelry, drinks, djs and goodie bags this weekend at the Uptown Emerging Designers Market, an indie designer shopping event! If you go, make sure to look for the Harriet's Alter Ego booth. (India.Arie's a fan.) [photo courtesy of GettyImages.com]

The Wonder of Stevie Nicks

Stevie+Nicks+Bluefly.jpgLegions of Stevie Nicks fans will descend on New York this weekend to commune with their gypsy muse at tonight’s 18th annual Night of a Thousand Stevies (NOTS). The angel-wing blouses will flutter and the amulets will swing as the Legends of Stevie Realness channel the original gold dust woman from her romantic enchanted boho days with Fleetwood Mac through her white-witch-in-platforms solo career. NOTS is a definite DO for connoisseurs of capes, coq feathers and coquespoons.

Australia Fashion Week Review

australian_fashion_week_flypaper_blog_bluefly.jpgMany times we tend to only take note of London, Paris and NYC's Fashion Week (none of us would ever admit out loud to checking out LA, though we do), but as I checked in over at FWD, I couldn't help but notice the fly fashion coming out of Australia. The most eye catching looks included goddess-inspired one-shoulder dresses, heavy gold brocade trim, in vibrant white, gold and purple chiffon as well futuristic jumpsuits in white patent leather. Loved the variety of ethnic faces and the "healthy looking model" theme too.

Met Gala Comes to a TV Near You

kate bosworth.jpg
Although we know the Met Gala is "the biggest night in fashion," sometimes it's a little hard to care when not only are you not invited but it's not even televised. No more of that: We learn from Fashion Week Daily that E! will be making the rounds this year, for a show "The E! Met Special," set to air on May 8 at 8pm (set those Tivos). Look for Audrey Tatou, Kate Bosworth, and Thandie Newton in Chanel, and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Peter Som.

Country Couture?

traver.jpgThe magazine Country Weekly is hosting its 2nd Annual Country Weekly Fashion show in June, and some of country's hottest stars are scheduled to appear at the event. Cute! Obviously, we can expect lots of denim, rhinestones, boots and belt buckles the size of watermelons but what about fashion heavyweights? We nominate Traver Rains to make an appearance, and make the Nashville kids gag with some glam rodeo get ups. And since the event is sponsored by Wrangler, we also think it would be cute if Marc Jacobs arrived, wearing some of that stuff he designed for Wrangler last year.

Spring in Stumptown

adamarnoldspring.jpgI had the pleasure of attending Portland designer Adam Arnold's spring 2008 show last Friday night, and I was thoroughly impressed. The clothes were fun, even great at times, but more interesting to me was Arnold's unfettered willingness to chat up the crowd and share his inspirations during the show. (Sample: "This dress is so European Vacation to me. You know, that scene when they go shopping in Milan?") His passion and personality (not to mention fearlessness when it came to spring colors and bold patterns) made me feel proud of P-town's ever-emerging fashion scene. I almost wish Adam would throw his hat in the "Project Runway" ring- he would be the most bubbly contestant ever- but then again, Portland has always kept a low profile. And we like it that way.

Fake Canal Street, Real Vuitton

murakami.jpg
The Times reports on the blockbuster Murakami exhibit opening: Kanye performed; controversial developer Bruce Ratner was honored later for his contribution to the arts (with Atlantic Yard protesters just outside the Brooklyn Museum doors); and those cash cow Murakami-Louis Vuitton bags made a reappearance, natch. In a flipping of the script, fake Canal Street-type stalls were set up outside of the Museum and REAL Vuittons were sold by "men who resembled the African immigrant vendors" who sell designer knockoffs in Chinatown. For the best of both worlds--discounted but real designer bags--check this out.

H is for Hermès

Bugatti Veyron par Hermès.jpgRecession, who? Last night, just outside the Hermès boutique in Manhattan's Financial District -- where waiters served hors d'oeuvres with hand-stitched linen napkins -- the new Bugatti Veyron par Hermès was on full display. Hermès teamed up with the French sports car company to design a stitchless leather interior, but the big H took the branding outside too. Check the H on the rims.

How Do You Wear This Stuff?: BRAND NEW BAGS

Rebecca_Minkoff-Hermes.jpgA great way to show off that dope new bag you just bought is to wear a simple outfit. At last night's Hermès event, designer Rebecca Minkoff toted one of her own amazing satchels with a pair of skinny jeans, crisp white shirt, cocktail ring and a short stack of bangles.

Bryant Park v. YouTube

Zulema Fall 08 invite.jpgIf you're an indie designer trying to make your way to Bryant Park, you've got a couple options: Project Runway or a benefactor who's got an in with Fern Mallis, Fashion VP at IMG, the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Season 2 alum, Zulema Griffin tried the former and doesn't have the latter so she created another option: YouTube. We spy a trend... do you?

Sun-dancing

Mischa.jpgI love Sundance Film Festival week, if for no other reason than to see photos of celebrities looking awkward in their cold-weather duds. I mean, is there ever really a way for a ghetto-fabulous guy like Puffy to rock a, um, puffy vest and not look like a dork? It's also amusing to see who among my favorite actresses forgets there's actually snow in Park City and still dresses like she's going for Whole Foods run in Beverly Hills, or, better yet, see who actually pulls off the Utah look. I always wonder if Hollywood types have that one closet for "Sundance clothes," or if they spring for new duds every year? Hmmmm. My guess is the latter, as long as they don't have to pay for them of course.

Three generations of Presley women hung out with each other at the Led Zeppelin tribute to Ahmet Ertegun concert in London yesterday, as did Jerry Hall and Mick's kids, Georgina and James. All evidence of gray was dyed, but Priscilla could have committed to the look by loosening that scarf and swapping her blazer for something like this. Kate, why didn't you tell her?

Celebs Do Lunchboxes

S5004093.JPGS5004075.JPGS5004088.JPG

'Tis the season of giving and celebrities are all up on it -- sort of. Last night, I scored an invite to the annual Celebs Do Lunchboxes to Help End Hunger event. It's a cute concept. Basically, a variety of celebrities (Anna Sui, Yoko Ono, Kanye West, Charlotte Ronson and Beyonce) decorate a lunch box in their trademark style. The boxes are then auctioned off for ridiculous amounts of dough, for charity. These are a few of the boxes that caught my eye. As you can see the celebs weren't above a little shameless self-promotion. I mean, really, Charlotte and Kanye, could we not have done more than slapped our logo on the box?

Lydia Hearst for Puma

As promised, I did indeed snag a coveted invite to the unveiling of the second Lydia Hearst Puma bag. Want in on the Game?

Last night I landed at the launch of Nintendo's clothing collection by Torrel Torrel. Yes, a clothing line. Yes, by Nintendo. Frankly, I wasn't overly impressed as the line mainly consisted of hip-hop fashion designs circa 1995. I personally was expecting something a little more kitschy a la "Hello Kitty" with a futuristic edge. However, I was impressed by the vast array of fashionistas on the scene. From punk-rockers, to corporate preps, to hip-hop divas, it seems that everyone wanted to get in on the game.

Doggie Don't

The house of Juicy launched its canine pawfume, nail pawlish and shampooch line at Bloomingdale's this weekend under the pawful banner of Juicy Crittoure, and while a Maltese or two may have rolled over and lost its lunch, I’m glad to report that not a single pit bull was harmed in the riot of perfume and fur. Let’s be frank, this line is for bimbos, not dogs and a squirt of the foul-smelling signature fragrance will appeal to the average pooch about as much as a sow’s ear will appeal to its miss.

When I Grow Up...

...can I be a little bit of every woman that blessed the stage at tonight's Glamour Women of the Year Awards?

CBS Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan, Journalist/Author/Activist Mariane Pearl, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, anchorwoman Diane Sawyer, model/actress Brooke Shields and so many more of my heroines were in the house at Avery Fisher Hall in Manhattan's Lincoln Center to give or receive Glamour's red trophies of abstract art and I was as inspired by the honorees as I was the presenters and guests. Seriously, when I grow up:

I want Donna Karan's clout.
2007_0404PicsNice0037.JPG
She's a designer, but the respect she's earned from her talent, hard work, and success has transcended fashion to the world of medical research. Inspired by Eastern philosophy and medicine, Karan -- who lost her business partner and husband of 17 years to cancer -- is working with Manhattan's Beth Israel Medical Center to bring a more holistic approach to healing. (I also want Donna's fur coat, but that's another story...)

I want Nancy Pelosi's introduction.

I am so late, but Stephen Colbert's speech made me want to On Demand the 'Daily Show'. He's brilliant!

I want these former child soldiers' forgiving spirit.
2007_0404PicsNice0023.JPG
Only God knows the magnitude of what Maurine Akello, Jennifer Achora, Nighty Acheng, Milly Ayuma, Sara Ayero and countless others suffered when they were kidnapped as children from their village in Uganda and forced into the Lord's Resistance Army as slave wives and soldiers. But instead of dwelling on their captivity, these woman are freeing minds and hearts with Empowering Hands, an NGO they founded that supports newly freed abductees with counseling, small business loans, scholarships and more.

I wanna call Taye Diggs, Eric Dane and James Pickens, Jr. work buddies.

How lucky is Grey's Anatomy creator, Shonda Rhimes that these hotties call her "boss"?

I want Brooke Shields' nine lives.
2007_0404PicsNice0044.JPG
Pictured here with actress Rashida Jones, Brooke, 42, has gone from controversial child actress to iconic teen model to Princeton grad to budding comic actress to wife, mother and author. (I wouldn't mind having Quincy Jones on speed dial either.)

I want Toni Morrison's energy.
2007_0404PicsNice0055.JPG
The woman is 76 years old and after penning more than 10 novels and essays, and winning the Pulitzer and the Nobel for her incisive, literary look at race, class and gender, the professor is at work on her next novel.

I want Narciso Rodriguez on my guest list.
2007_0404PicsNice0057.JPG
If we were on it like that, maybe he'd give me a free dress.

murakami-moca.jpgMore fun tidbits from the Takashi Murakami MoCA party in Los Angeles: Marc Jacobs dyed his hair blue and Tom Ford encouraged everyone to nab plastic placemats designed especially for the $1000-per-plate event, "Make sure you get a set of four," Ford advised, as Naomi Campbell scooped up a few more than that. Buff in the Buff

26TOWEN.jpgFour naked hunks will be on full frontal display at Marc by Marc in Soho this weekend to help sell and promote skin cancer awareness tees. While the MJ staffers won't bare it all, they will be pretty naked nevertheless. "They compete with each other about who can sell the most T-shirts," Marc Jacobs' business partner, Robert Duffy, told WWD. "So I said, 'why not autograph them and appear naked on Saturday,' and they just said, 'OK.'" Now that's a dedicated sales staff.

It's a Wrap

PDXFashionWeek.jpgAfter impressive showings by 36 designers, Portland Fashion Week wrapped up Wednesday with a classy bang. Standouts from the six-day affair included local favorites such as Seaplane owners Kate Towers, pictured, and Holly Stalder, and Dallas-based Laura Chapuis, the brains behind the ultra-sustainable Habitude (peace, silk and organic cotton, anyone?). It's exciting to see this once-small, regional event get a lot of press, giving its designers the forum they deserve. Lisa Radon over at Ultra has the week's most comprehensive rundown, making her just the woman to launch The Dressing Room, the Northwest's first glossy, fashion trade magazine in early 2008.

naturevsfuture.jpgI like to think L.A fashion week's sustainability overtones trickled down from Portland, Oregon, the bastion of all things green and, now, home of the first wholly eco-friendly style bonanza. This Friday kicks off Portland Fashion Week, which boasts an impressive lineup of hot green designers, including Anna Cohen, Naturevsfuture and Sameunderneath, among many others. Hey, if this year goes well, maybe next year will be really really green.

Fashion Weak

nicky-hilton-chick.jpgNew York Fashion Week. Sure, an institution. Los Angeles Fashion Week. Okay, yeah. Then Miami Fashion Week. Uhhh, I guess. Then Texas Fashion Week. Hmmm. San Francicso Fashion Week. Boston. Portland. Chicago. D.C. Now, there's Virginia Fashion Week and we think it's high time to pump the fashion week brakes. It's great that everybody wants to celebrate their style -- and VA, with its big homegrown labels and skaters and surfers and hipsters -- certainly has it. But enough with the off-the-map fashion weeks people, seriously. A true fashion week showcasing art and commerce is one thing; a series of amateur shows in a Holiday Inn with clothes from the mall is quite another. What's next, Rural Appalachian Fashion Week? Backwoods Mississippi Fashion Week? Sheesh.

Emerald City Style

Last Thursday's Fashion First benefit show in Seattle was all over the map, but in a good way. The house was packed with seen-and-be-seen style hounds who proved an apt audience for both higher-end boutique looks and those by newbie designers. As I predicted, downtown boutique Polite Society had a flawless showing; the ladies were especially keen on this ensemble by German designer Hannes Roether. The fact that the smokin' hot male model had a twin brother walking the runway too probably didn't hurt. (Photos by Yuriy Manchik)

Hardware Wars

Chicken wire, garbage bags, and duct tape were just a few of the "ingredients" used to create fashion confections at the "Project-Runway"-like Fashion Project in Denver two weeks ago. Four challenges, twelve contestants and one top prize -- a trip to New York Fashion Week -- brought out the best in local design talent. The third challenge (and our favorite) required contestants to create an outfit from a $150 Ace Hardware gift certificate. The winner, Stephanie Ohnmacht, made a strapless sundress from canvas cloth trimmed with duct tape. The bodice was made from her own macrame webbing, the skirt decorated with birdseed, and she finished it all off with a hat made from a fiberglass dent-repair kit. Hot!

On the down side, some of the dresses included were not designed by Balenciaga -- this is the "legacy" part, I guess -- such as the beaded Oscar de la Renta gown Laura Bush wore to her husband's second inauguration.

Capitol Style

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as a fashion show in Washington DC. Even designers as unbuttoned and unlikely as Betsey Johnson showed her stuff, in a show dominated by collections from African, Asian and Latin American designers. "The men's runway was, of course, dominated by suits," reports the Washingtonian. And the edgier men's stuff, "reminded me of SWAT teams, the Secret Service, and the Army." Tres chic. Florida's Latest Fashion Week

7411_cat08_edited_normal.jpgShapely eveningwear and busty swimwear ruled at Fort Lauderdale's first fashion week, called FTL Moda 2007. The vibe is somewhere between the ladies-who-lunch vibe of Palm Beach and the Frederick's-of-Hollywood feel of Miami. One stylist described Rachel Lym's swimsuits as follows: "These swimsuits have Swarovski crystals. They should never touch the water. They are for sitting on your yacht and sipping champagne." fw-mb.jpgNot to be outdone by Mercedes-Benz, which sponsors fashion shows in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, and Saab, which recently supported a solar-clothing project, Cadillac is taking the road to the runway via Dallas, Texas, where it will underwrite Cadillac Presents Fashion at the Park. CH Carolina Herrera, Diesel and Lilly Pulitzer will be there.

Bazaar Bizarre

diycrafters.jpgThe Bazaar Bizarre, held yesterday in Boston and Los Angeles, was truly a wonder to behold. Between purses shaped like giant steaks, knit cupcakes, robot ornaments and stained glass underwear, the event was like the mall of your dreams, where everything is weird and homemade and nothing is corporate.

Shoe Freakout

NYSE.jpgThe New York Shoe Expo starts tomorrow, displaying the latest in kicks from Sigerson Morrison to Ed Hardy. Some will exhibit at the Javits Center, or open their showroom doors to the trade. Attendees will surely get a glipse of the future, such as news of Puma's upscale footwear line.

Bringing Sexy Back

53050_celebrity_city_Victoria_Secrets_Models_Show_75_123_594lo.jpgMore booty than usual will be on TV tonight during the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Highlights include usually-sullen model Jessica Stam smiling while wearing a giant silver pillow and Gisele Bundchen dressed like a flying Xena Warrior Princess. Justin Timberlake managed to sing without tearing anyone's clothes off, but he did give more than a glance to a model's derriere.

Condom Couture for a Cause

worldAIDS.jpgYet another reason to break that condom dress out of the closet -- today is World AIDS Day. Designers around the world have turned thousands of lowly rubbers into surprisingly fashion-forward frocks (the one pictured is from Australia). And lest you think this kind of condom awareness doesn't make a difference, take heart: condom use is actually on the rise, particularly among those most at risk -- young women in Africa.

Fashion Heads Unite

mima.jpgBigwigs from the fashion world will come together for Milano Fashion Global Summit this week, including CEOs from Versace, Miss Sixty and Valentino. Wouldn't we love to sit in on seminars such as "Current Scene and Future Tendencies in Fashion, Costuming and Style" or "Perspectives and Methods for Identifying Trends and Transforming them into Profits." It's all business, folks. [via Fashion Week Daily]

Salty Dogs

presskit01.jpgSalt Lake City, UT, is not usually known as a hotbed of fashion, but tonight all that will change with Black Chandelier's fall 2006 runway show. It's free and open to the public, but first reserve yourself a spot at blackchandelier.com. With goodie bags stocked with Aveda, Tokidoki and Tarina Tarantino, it's worth shedding your polar fleece and getting dolled up to go see. You may recognize a face or two from "Top Model."

Bionic People

02fitness.1.190.jpgPurist runners have long been opposed to flashy accessories, save for their terry head bands and silky short shorts. But look out, a new type of runner emerged. At the New York City Marathon yesterday, streets filled with scores of bionic-like people reminiscent of Jaime Sommers with cybernetic limbs wrapped in wires and shoes filled with microchip sensors to monitor heart rate and speed. Purity, huh? Next thing we'll be seeing is trendy, sweat absorbent belts on top of their t-shirts and iPods that fit inside hammered gold rings. Wasn't that already a skit on Saturday Night Live? Fashion Awards for Brits

reich_fashion_110106_FRESH.jpgEngland's most stylish folk will pat themselves on the back tonight during the British Fashion Awards, but left uncelebrated will be all the weird Nazi imagery employed by British designers in recent seasons. I guess they're just trying anything to shock the jaded fashion world, but hey, the Blitz wasn't that long ago.
