Fly or Bye: The Vest

black_vests_blueflys_blog_flypaper_nyc_trends_by_najwa_moses.JPGSeen on many a hipster, hip-hopper and of course fashionista, the vest shows no signs of slowing down and I can't front, I have two of them myself--one in denim and one in black lace--but I have to wonder........

Fly or Bye: Men's Pastel Suede Sneakers

pastel_sneakers_for_men_blueflys_blog_flypaper.JPGI caught these sneakers on quite a sexy and stylish fashionisto; I'm absolutely loving the mix of the pastel shade with the suede material.

Men Who Aren't Scottish Should Never Wear Skirts

bluefly_flypaper_blog_kilt.jpg Summer has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest and that means one thing: It's Utilikilt time! In the last 10 days, having recently been in Seattle, Eugene, and back to Portland, I've seen no fewer than a dozen of these horrible toolbelts-parading-as-man-skirts on the lithe bodies of otherwise seemingly normal dudes. Why, oh why??? Ladies, let us assert control over one of the few things that we control in this life - fashion - and show these misguided gents that pleated skirts belong to us.

How Men Should Rock Shorts in the Summer

blueflys_blog_flypaper_navy_blazer.JPGThis gent totally rocks out a pair of white cabana shorts by pairing them with a classic navy blazer and funky leather floral pin; extra points for the Gucci bag. Love it!

Do You Reeeally Want Models to Look Like You?

Giorgio-Armani-men-spring-2009-young-real-models-Bluefly-blog-FlyPaper.jpgYohji-Yamamoto-men-spring-2009-older-real-models-Bluefly-blog-FlyPaper.jpgBetween Vogue Italia's all black models issue, and the old, chubby models hitting the men's show runways in Milan, it seems the collective fashion powers are finally waking up to the fact that peeps are sick of the homogeneous parade that's presented as ultimate beauty. But are we really? How will we respond if fashion becomes populated with "real" people? Study after study shows that we discriminate against fugly people in our daily lives all the time. Tall men get more love than shorties, pretty, smart people earn more than "plain," smart people. Even ugly defendants are more likely to be convicted than pretty ones. Think we'll respond differently if "normal"-looking people (who aren't celebrities) show up on fashion magazine covers? Magazine editors and designers have bet "no" for years. Ready to prove them wrong? [photo from Giorgio Armani Spring '09 Menswear Collection (l) and Yohji Yamamoto Spring '09 Menswear Collection courtesy of men.style.com]

Goodbye to the Tie?

justin-in-tie-flypaper-1.jpgThe Men's Dress Furnishing Association, which has represented American necktie makers for over 60 years, announced that it is closing down. Tough economic times are partly to blame, but another sad truth is that men don’t wear them much anymore; a recent Gallup Poll said that just six percent of American men wear ties to work. But are they really out? Justin Timberlake, for what it's worth, helped personify the skinny tie comeback that was fashionable among guys not long ago, and we've seen the bow tie make a return as well. So there's your hook for your easy Father's Day gift: 'Dad, I got you a beautiful tie; I thought you could kickstart a resurgence.'

Boys In The Hood?

Against all odds, hoodies that zip up into face masks with eye holes have made it into U.S. shops without getting banned. This fetching leather skeleton hoodie was selling in a men's store on New York's Lower East Side for a cool $999.99. Why on earth would anyone want one? Intent to commit a fashion crime is the only reason I can think of.

Manorexia: The Book

A new book "The Good Eater" tells the story of former model Ron Saxen getting healthy after years of starvation, extreme exercise and binge eating. One part tells of him gorging on pizza, M&Ms, fudge, ice cream and candy bars the day before having to model in underwear. Clearly, female models aren't alone in the sometimes deadly quest to be thin. Could this mean scales and measuring tape at the next men's Milan shows?

Related Links: Certainly, anyone would feel self-conscious about standing in front of fashion people in their underwear, even if they were cute.
